The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games contributed approximately £1.2bn to the UK economy, according to an evaluation of the impact of the event.

The Games also generated £79.5m in social value and are predicted to deliver £151.4m of further social value in the longer term, according to the evaluation.

The Games was supported by the Business and Tourism Programme, which was the first economic legacy programme to be aligned to a Commonwealth Games.

It was delivered by the West Midlands Growth Company in collaboration with the Government, Visit Britain and West Midlands Combined Authority.

Published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the evaluation said the Games were delivered on time and under budget, with £70m of surplus funding reinvested in the West Midlands.

The region also saw a 27% increase in foreign direct investment projects between 2021/22 and 2022/23, compared to a 4% increase in the rest of the UK.
