Ministers have written to councils to warn of attempted foreign interference in next year’s elections.

The Government earlier this month revealed ‘malicious cyber activity’ by Russian intelligence services had targeted civil servants, journalists and non-government organisations in an attempt to ‘meddle in British politics’

The letter from local government minister Simon Hoare and security minster Tom Tugendhat warned it was ‘not an isolated incident’ and could extend to local elections.
