The Government has announced £2bn in funding aimed at delivering up to 18,000 new social and affordable homes.
Deputy prime minister and housing secretary, Angela Rayner said the investment would help ‘get working people and families into secure homes and onto the housing ladder.’
Kate Henderson, chief executive at the National Housing Federation, said the funding was ‘hugely welcome’.
‘Investment in social housing is not only key to tackling the housing crisis, but is also excellent value for money, reducing government spending on benefits, health, and homelessness as well as boosting growth,’ she added.
However, Jamie Gollings, interim Rresearch director at Social Market Foundation, commented: ‘Any investment in social housing is investment worth making, but if the Government is serious about hitting 1.5 million homes over the parliament it is going to need to accelerate.’
