Somerset Council has announced an AI trial that could accelerate the production of special educational needs reports for children.

To minimise waiting times faced by vulnerable children, the council plan to incorporate AI to help write children’s education, health and care plans (EHCPs), as well as for admin work.

A council spokesperson said the trial is ‘very much in the testing phase’, but confirmed the local authority is ‘moving forward carefully and with consideration’ in accordance with best practice.

‘Somerset Council is absolutely clear that the function of AI is to reduce bureaucracy, paperwork and administrative tasks. We will never write EHCPs simply using AI alone. A human being will always be involved in the process’, they added.
