West Sussex County Council has received £5.5m to pay for the installation of up to 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) charge points.

Working with district and borough councils across the county, West Sussex aims for the charge points to be installed at 230 locations on-street and within council car parks by April 2024.

The funding from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles will cover 60% of installation costs, with the remainder covered by charge point operator Connected Kerb.

It will also pay for an additional 400 passive charge points that can be activated when demand increases.

Cabinet member for highways and transport Joy Dennis said the funding would ‘significantly bolster’ the council’s existing scheme ‘to make on-street charging more accessible for residents who do not have off-street parking and boost our efforts to enable sustainable transport options across West Sussex.’
