The Government’s announcement of £270m for museums and galleries is welcome but still just a ‘sticking plaster’ to cover a lack of overall funding, council chiefs say.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced that galleries, museums, libraries and heritage buildings will receive a share of the multi-million-pound Arts Everywhere Fund.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the £270m boost would allow the arts ‘to continue to flourish across Britain.’
Cllr Liz Green, chair of the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism & Sport Board, said the cash boost will be appreciated by councils but warned the overall funding gap facing councils will reach £8bn in 2028/29.
‘Unless that gap is filled, the cultural services that our communities cherish will continue to be under-resourced, at risk of closure and councils will be hindered in their ability to support the Government’s health and growth missions.’
