The Government has provided an extra £10m for social care for those councils most under pressure as winter approaches.

While also announcing a £200m investment to boost NHS resilience as temperatures drop, ministers bolstered the £600m announced in July for social care support with an extra £10m aimed at councils with the most significant winter pressures.

While £570m will be distributed for all councils to use over the next two years - boosting home care services and supporting people coming out of hospital as well as helping prevent admissions, the new £10m can be bid for on top of the already-announced £30m.

President of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS), Beverley Tarka, said: ‘We welcome the extra commitment of £10m from the Government for the areas that are under most pressure this winter.’

ADASS emphasised the need for a long term plan and funding to invest in more preventative home care for older and disabled people to help address hospital admissions.
