More than 1.6 million drivers were slapped with Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) in 2024 for parking on single or double yellow lines, making it one of the UK’s most common parking offences, according to The AA.

Yet nearly four in 10 drivers admit they’ve ignored the rules at least once, with 10% repeatedly flouting them, highlighting a growing disconnect between enforcement and driver behaviour.

Over half a million fines came from just 10 councils, including five in London, generating over £40m at a standard £70 charge.
