£1.5m environmental refit will save city tonnes of cash

Two giant tower blocks are set to become low-carbon hubs in a £1.5m energy refit by a joint partnership.
Birmingham City Council announced plans to retro-fit 124 residential dwellings in a bid to save 482 tonnes of CO2 every year.
The work will be carried out by Birmingham District Energy Company (BDEC) – a partnership between the council’s urban design team and leading energy partner Utilicom.
It is part of ambitious plans by the city to cut its carbon footprint by 60% by 2026.
Cllr John Lines, cabinet member for housing, said: ‘I’m confident that this may be the first of a number of schemes for which the city bids, which will mark Birmingham as one of the most proactive cities in creating a residential district energy system.’
