Greens target Labour in local election campaign launch

The Green Party has launched its 2026 local elections campaign with a focus on tackling the housing crisis.

Party leader Zack Polanski is positioning the Greens as an alternative to Labour, arguing that current policies have failed to deliver secure, low-cost housing for many communities.

‘People across the country are sick of being taken for granted by the Labour Party,’ he said.

‘It’s the same story in local councils as it is nationally: Labour assumes that voters have nowhere else to go, so it doesn’t think it has to do anything to try and win them.’

Central to the campaign is a commitment to significantly expand social housing, alongside proposals such as rent controls and the abolition of leasehold.

The party says these measures are designed to address rising living costs and improve housing security.

The Greens highlighted their record in local government, claiming success in delivering council homes and community-led initiatives.

The announcement builds on the Wales Green Party manifesto released earlier this week, which critics argued would require ‘substantial increases’ in taxes or cuts to other services.
