The Long Course Weekend will take place in North Yorkshire next year, marking the first time the multi-sport event has been staged in England.
It is hoped that the event, which is based on the triathlon, will attract thousands of visitors when it takes place next September and bring in £2m to the local economy.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, Cllr Derek Bastiman, said: ‘To host such a well-respected and internationally renowned sporting event is a real coup for us.
‘The Long Course Weekend has become a very popular date in the sporting calendar in countries across the world, and it will be a privilege for North Yorkshire to host an event next year.
‘It will give us the chance to showcase to a global audience what we can offer here in what is one of the most beautiful and diverse parts of the country.’
First established in Wales in 2010, the competition now takes place across the world, including in Belgium, Holland and New Zealand.
It is open to competitors of all abilities, who can take part in swimming, cycling, running, or all three, with varied distances for each discipline on offer.
Long Course Weekend founder and chief executive Matthew Evans said: ‘We have wanted to bring the Long Course Weekend to England for a long time now, and North Yorkshire is the perfect location as the county has a proven track record of staging major sporting events, such as the Tour de France’s Grand Départ.’
