Financial support will be delivered to help Woking BC repay its debt, the Government has reiterated.

The move comes from Jim McMahon, Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, who confirmed the Government’s ‘commitment to financial assistance in advance of any reorganisation’ in a letter written to council leaders.

In a statement from Woking BC, the decision is said to benefit ‘both the council and its successor authority’ through financial assistance that will support ‘sustainable’ service delivery.

Cllr Dale Roberts, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance and Economy, said the council ‘welcome[s]’ the ‘renewed commitment to future financial support’.

‘It represents an important step towards addressing our historic debt position as part of wider discussions on the future structure of local government in Surrey.’

He added: ‘Whilst there is much still to be agreed, this announcement provides reassurance as we continue to work closely with government and other Surrey councils to secure a sustainable financial future for Woking and the best possible outcomes for residents.

‘We remain fully committed to delivering our Improvement and Recovery Plan, ensuring that Woking is in the strongest possible position ahead of any future changes.’
