Whitehall announces £10m boost for coastal communities

More multi-million pound projects to boost coastal communities have been given the go-ahead.

The Government announced it will provide more than £10m for five towns under its Coastal Communities Fund.

The latest projects are forecast to support nearly 1,000 jobs and attract up to £7.9m in additional investment from public and private sector sources in places from Cumbria to Kent.

It brings the total Coastal Communities Fund investment to £228m, which is supporting 359 projects across the UK which are forecast to create over 20,000 jobs.

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and local growth Jake Berry said: 'Ensuring our coastal towns have the support they need to thrive is at the heart of this Government’s plan to level up every part of the UK.

'Building on our £228m investment into coastal communities, the projects receiving funding today were designed by local people who know best what will bring the biggest benefit to their community.'

Projects receiving funds in the latest wave are Cumbria Coastal Activities Centre in Whitehaven Harbour, the Southwold Enterprise Hub, Dover Soul town centre rejuvenation scheme, an environmental innovation hub at Bournemouth and Poole and Destination Lydney Harbour in Gloucestershire.
