Local authority leaders in Wales have called for more funding to help deliver net zero commitments.
Councils in Wales are encountering severe financial strain as they cut emissions from public services and strive to reach the Government’s target of achieving net zero by 2030.
The Welsh Government’s Low Carbon Heat Capital Grant has assisted 18 councils across Wales in their decarbonisation projects. However, all 22 local authorities require further funding to aid them in enacting large-scale change.
A spokesperson for the WLGA said: ‘Councils have already shown what’s possible – 70 buildings have been decarbonised, and more are ready to follow. But to meet the net zero target by 2030, we’ll need sustained investment to scale up this work.’
The WLGA’s Climate Change Support Programme is to continue assisting local authorities as they progress towards creating a net zero public sector.
