Wales to ‘correct’ guidance on 20mph speed limits

The Welsh Government will change its guidance on 20mph speed limits, the transport minister has said.

Ken Skates told North Wales Live he would address concerns that have been raised on a ‘consistent basis’, including in a petition signed by half a million people, since the default speed limit in built-up areas was brought in last September.

He said that while there was generally support for 20mph limits on housing estates and outside schools and hospitals, the restriction had been introduced on routes that ‘shouldn’t have been included’.

Mr Skates, who was appointed transport minister last month in Vaughan Gething’s first cabinet, said: ‘We've put our hands up to say “the guidance has to be corrected”.

‘This will enable councils to revert back those routes that are not appropriate. Whether the change will be radical will largely depend on what people want.’

It would not be fair to place the cost of changing speed limit signs on councils, he added.

The leader of the Welsh Local Government Association, Andrew Morgan, said: ‘Local authorities are on board with the 20mph scheme, but they’re generally glad to see adjustments being made to ensure that it works for Welsh communities.’

Mr Skates will make a statement to the Senedd tomorrow.
