Local government expects another one-year finance settlement despite warnings that failing to address an estimated £4bn black hole could ‘collapse' the sector.

A report by trade union Unison this week said failure to rectify the growing problem soon risked the ‘widespread collapse of local government' after its research found that councils across England, Scotland and Wales faced a collective funding shortfall of £4.3bn in 2025-26, with the figure rising to £8.5bn by 2026-27.
