A section of Apex Park in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge has been cordoned off after suspected unexploded ordnance from World War II was uncovered during construction works.

Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police acted swiftly after a contractor reported discovering what appear to be mortar shells and a grenade on the east side of the park's lake.

A 50-metre cordon has been put in place, construction work halted, and temporary fencing is being erected to secure the area.

A specialist contractor will be brought in to assess and safely remove any remaining ordnance. The public are urged to stay clear of the site.
