There are more than 70,000 public charging devices for electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK, according to mapping service Zapmap.

By September last year, 70,434 charge points were recorded by Zapmap – a 41% increase on the 49,882 installed by September 2023.

In 2024, the average rate of installation also climbed to 1,872 new devices each month, compared to 730 in 2022.

Zapmap said the UK was ‘well on its way to building the robust charging network needed for mass EV adoption’ and forecast there would be 100,000 charge points by August.

RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said: ‘It’s positive to see that the availability of EV charge points is improving.

‘However, it’s also important that their affordability is addressed, especially for anyone without a driveway who can’t charge cheaply at home.

‘There is still a huge gulf in prices between public and home chargers, partly due to the higher rate of VAT at public charge points compared to the 5% domestic rate.’
