Tributes have been paid to Cllr Ian Brookfield, the leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, who died on Sunday of cancer at the age of 57.
The local authority announced yesterday that he died after ‘a fearless battle with cancer’ following a diagnosis earlier this year.
‘On behalf of everyone at the City of Wolverhampton Council, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family at this difficult time,’ said a statement from the council.
‘He was a proud and committed Leader of the city, relentlessly dedicated to serving the people of Wolverhampton until the end.’
Labour leader Keir Starmer also offered his condolences yesterday, tweeting: ‘As Leader of Wolverhampton Council, and as a former Mayor, he gave many years to local government. He led his City through the pandemic and drove the work to support residents through the cost-of-living crisis.
‘On behalf of the whole Labour Party, condolences to his wife Paula and their family.’
I’m sad to learn of the passing of Ian Brookfield.
