Local government figures from across the sector have been recognised in the first New Year's Honours list under King Charles III.

One of the highest honours went to Professor Sir Michael Marmot, who has been made a Companion of Honour for services to public health.

His body of work on health inequalities includes a landmark review in 2010.

Labour Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, has been awarded a damehood.

She was re-elected to the role for the third time in 2021.

North Tyneside Council's former director of children's and adult services, Jacqueline Old, received a CBE.

CBEs also went to deputy chief executive of the Local Government Association and former Association of Directors of Adult Social Services president, Sarah Pickup, for services to social care.

Two officials at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities received CBEs - Graham Duncan, former deputy director of the care and reform team, and Christine Farrugia, chief of staff to commissioners.

Katherine Eaton was recognised for her work as the special projects lead at Westminster City Council, having been instrumental in preparations for the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

She was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order, which recognises services to the royal family.

Catriona Innes, former clerk and adviser to the lord lieutenant and provost of Glasgow, and Julia Knight, lieutenancy officer at Somerset, were also admitted to the order.
