Thorn Lighting is helping North Tyneside Council to save millions of pounds and help the environment through the refurbishment of thousands of street lamps.
7,300 sodium lamps across the borough are set to be replaced with modern energy efficient LED street lights and so far almost 4,000 old street lamps have been replaced with Thorn’s Civiteq highly effective LED lighting thanks to a partnership between the council and SSE Enterprise.
It is estimated that the scheme, which is due for completion in June 2018, will generate savings of £7.9 million over the next 17 years and will slash carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes a year, which represents a 7% reduction in the council’s carbon footprint. The Council funded £1.95 million project upgrade will save around £465,000 annually and will have paid for itself within five years. SSE Enterprise, who specified Thorn luminaires for the scheme, manages street lighting in North Tyneside on behalf of the council.
