More than 50 Thanet refuse collectors have begun an indicative industrial action ballot, with GMB members saying they can no longer bear the brunt of public frustration and councillor ‘excuses’ over the district's refuse collection failures.

GMB has written to Thanet District Council raising a collective grievance, with the ballot closing on 4 September. A failed resolution could see the union move to a full strike ballot.

GMB organiser Frank Macklin said members had ‘lost all faith’ in the council's ability to run the service properly, adding the union would ‘not allow the workforce to be scapegoated’ for ongoing failings in the Cleansing Service.

A Thanet District Council spokesperson said issues had arisen following the introduction of Simpler Recycling for some residents, compounded by an HGV driver shortage, creating ‘a more challenging work environment’ for crews.

The council said recruiting additional drivers was a priority, with progress made in recent weeks, and confirmed it was in discussions with staff and unions to resolve concerns.
