A mayoral election could take place in South Yorkshire this year after it was confirmed that police and crime commissioner responsibilities will be moved to the regional leader.
The Home Secretary this week confirmed that Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) functions will be exercised by the mayor from the May 2024 elections.
The transfer of the PCC powers means that the mayoral role is considered a new one and so might need to be voted on again.
The change could result in current Mayor of South Yorkshire Oliver Coppard's term being halved.
