South Lanarkshire deputy leader suspended

The police have charged a Scottish Labour councillor after an alleged incident last month.

The deputy leader of South Lanarkshire Council Jackie Burns, 52, has also been suspended from the Labour Party.

The council leader Eddie McAvoy has announced that Cllr Burns will ‘cease to represent’ Labour on the council while the suspension is in force.

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire said: ‘The council has been informed that Cllr Burns has been suspended by his party, and the council leader has advised that Cllr Burns will cease to represent the Labour Party on the council while he is suspended.’
