Seven people have been charged in connection with a missing £10.25m council loan to Northampton Town FC.

The police investigation began six years ago after the disappearance of cash loaned by Northampton Borough Council to Northampton Town FC to pay for the re-development of their East Stand.

The six men and a woman, aged between 47 and 70, are facing charges under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. The legislation states that any person providing a donation over £500 to a political party is legally required to give details of the source of the funds.

A public interest report published earlier this year found 'significant failures of corporate governance’ at Northampton BC may have been unlawful.
