Scotland transport chiefs 'prepared' for extreme weather

Transport chiefs in Scotland claim they are better prepared for extreme weather events this winter after a series of improvements were made to network resilience and communication with travellers.

Transport Scotland recently made a commitment to bolster stocks of salt, while a network of new cameras will improve decision-making during severe weather. It has published a daily gritting plan to ensure both the media and public are not kept in the dark like previous years.

New guidance has been issued to highways contractors setting out which alternative de-icers could be used on the network when temperatures plummet and a hotline has been set up to highlight problems to hauliers.

Scotland's transport minister Keith Brown said: The network is prepared for the most severe weather conditions and a series of improvements are in place, however we can never rule out disruption and it important that people continue to monitor weather and travel reports.'
