A £90m funding boost for a fleet of new buses could be on the table for West Yorkshire.

The investment is due to be discussed by regional leaders at a meeting today, as part of the second stage of plans to roll out the area’s new Weaver Network buses.

Through the £90m cash injection, the cost of 193 new buses would be covered, with the potential for an additional 63 to be introduced in the second round of franchising.

A third round of franchising will see roughly 576 new buses having been delivered to West Yorkshire in total.

The first round of buses on the network is predicted to be operational by May next year, with the second following in early 2028.

Bus timetables, fares, and routes will also be decided by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, instead of private operators. Furthermore, profits generated from fares will be reinvested into the enhancement of services.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said: ‘This investment demonstrates our commitment to building a better-connected West Yorkshire with a bus network that is fit for the future.

‘Dozens of state-of-the-art electric buses are on the production line as we speak, while work is ongoing to bring depots and facilities into public control. The Weaver Network and its buses will be the pride of West Yorkshire.’
