Labour leader Keir Starmer has appointed his deputy Angela Rayner as the party’s new shadow levelling up secretary.

Ms Rayner replaces Lisa Nandy as Michael Gove’s shadow ahead of a General Election in which Labour will target former Red Wall seats surprisingly won by the Boris Johnson-led Conservatives in 2019.

Sir Keir has also handed Ms Rayner the official title of shadow deputy Prime Minister.

She was already deputy leader of the Labour Party.
