Questions over council land purchase proposals

Questions have been raised over the impact of Labour proposals to enable councils to buy land at knock-down prices.

Proposed legislation under a Labour Government would allow councils to buy land at its agricultural value using Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) rather than including so-called hope value factoring in future development.

It builds on a similar Jeremy Corbyn-era proposal that would have handed the same powers to a land trust instead of local authorities.

However, national land director at property services firm Leaders Romans Group, Ian Barnett, said the use of CPOs faced ‘all manner of legal challenges’.
