Accident claims lodged against local authorities in the UK due to potholes and other highway defects have cost the taxpayer nearly £40m since 2020, research reveals.
Accident Claims Advice sent freedom of information requests to nearly 100 councils to find out the cost of pedestrian accident claims over the last five years.
Of the 82 authorities that responded, Barnet Council had the highest claim costs at over £1.6m, while Richmond, Hackney, Barking and Dagenham and Bexley councils also had costs of over £1m.
