Police and council officers have met with families who were identified in relation to ashes found during an investigation at a funeral home in Hull.

In March, police attended three Legacy Independent Funeral Services sites in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire after receiving a report of concern for care of the deceased.

Investigations found 35 bodies, which have since been identified, and a quantity of ashes at one site on Hessle Road in Hull.

Police and forensic scientists determined they would be unable to recover a meaningful DNA profile from the ashes, but documents from the funeral home have been used in an attempt to identify next of kin.

As a result, officer have contacted 163 families to provide an update about the recovered ashes, offer support and discuss what options they have.

Support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council have also attended meetings.

A man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of prevention of a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position.

They have been released on bail while investigations continue.
