The leader of Plymouth council has applauded the ‘war-time spirit’ of the city’s residents after a Second World War bomb was safely detonated at sea.

Thousands of people were evacuated after a 500kg (1,102lb) unexploded bomb was discovered in a garden last Tuesday.

On Friday police closed roads and rail and bus services were stopped as the bomb was transported 1.4 miles through the city's streets before being destroyed in a controlled explosion in the sea.

Cllr Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council, said: ‘I think it is fair to say that the last few days will go down in history for Plymouth. This war-time bomb has really brought out war-time spirit, people coming together to really support each other and whilst it has been really tough – we got through it!’
