Prime Minister Keir Starmer has claimed there is ‘lots of housing’ that can be used to provide temporary accommodation across local authorities.

Sir Keir Starmer yesterday told the Commons Liaison Committee that he is ‘furious at the last Government for leaving tens of thousands of asylum seekers unprocessed, with nowhere to live, other than accommodation paid for by the taxpayer’.

Speaking about the housing and temporary accommodation crisis, Starmer said there is ‘lots of housing and many local authorities that can be used’ to help accommodate asylum seekers and families experiencing homelessness.

‘We’re identifying where it can be used’, added Starmer, who said he would write to the committee to provide details.

Addressing the ‘wider question’ of local authority funding, Starmer emphasised that it ‘needs review’ and said multi-year settlements for councils are required.
