Local authorities are set to get a multi-million-pound funding boost to unlock disused brownfield sites and build thousands of new homes, the Prime Minister has announced.
Fifty-four councils will get a share of £68m to cover the cost of decontamination, clearing disused buildings or improving infrastructure to prepare sites for housebuilding.
Delivered through the Brownfield Land Release Fund, the funding will help deliver an estimated 5,200 homes, according to the Government.
PM Keir Starmer said the Government’s ‘brownfield-first approach’ would see ‘disused sites and industrial wastelands transformed into thousands of new homes’.
Manchester will be one of the cities benefitting from this funding. Nearly £3m will go towards unlocking a vacant brownfield site in the city to build 220 affordable homes.
Eastbourne will also receive £2.2m to build 100 new homes including 80 affordable houses, while over £1.7m will go towards delivering 100 homes in Weston-Super-Mare’s town centre.
Around £1.4m will go to Northampton to transform a former bus depot and deliver 72 new homes.
