Forty-two local authorities – or one in 10 – are considering cuts to waste collection services, new data reveals.
Research by the TaxPayers’ Alliance suggests that eight million people could experience some kind of bin change, of which five million could see a reduction in the frequency of collections.
Over 800,000 could have their weekly recycling service cut to fortnightly or monthly, according to the TPA’s findings.
Three councils – Bristol, Carmarthenshire, and East Ayrshire – are looking into changing residual waste collections to once every four weeks.
Four local authorities – North Ayrshire, Dundee, Angus, and East Ayrshire – are considering changing recycling collections to once every four weeks.
Responding to the findings, a spokesperson for the Local Government Association said there is ‘no one-size-fits-all solution’ to collecting bins and so decisions are ‘best made at a local level’.
They added: ‘We know this local approach works as our own polling shows a majority of residents are happy with the way their bins are collected.’
