The mayor of South Yorkshire is advocating for the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Mayor Oliver Coppard has announced his support for plans to spend almost £160m on the revival of the airport, which shut three years ago.

In a statement from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Mr Coppard said he will ‘confidently vote in favour' of the funding for the project, despite its 'risks'.

He explained that the scheme will also involve the 'development of a sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing hub at Gateway East.'

Council leaders are due to discuss the project at a meeting next Tuesday, during which the final funding details will be confirmed.
