Leicester’s directly-elected mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, has said he is ‘baffled’ by the widespread disorder in the city.

Leicestershire Police made more than 40 arrests after trouble between what was thought to have been groups of young Hindus and Muslims spilled onto the streets.

Sir Peter blamed inaccurate social media for the community unrest.

He said: ‘We often talk about the good community relations in Leicester, but you can never be complacent about it.

'It is always a work in progress and it is quite clear there is work to be done here.’

Reports suggested that around half of those arrested were not from the area.

Police officers and horses were diverted from the Queen’s funeral to deal with the disorder, which kicked off after a cricket match between India and Pakistan.
