A Devon cat who is famous for exploring his local town has been awarded official ‘catizenship’ by the Mayor.

Polo has become a local celebrity after being photographed in unexpected places around Tavistock, including the doctor’s surgery, pet shop and even a nightclub.

A social media campaign was launched by his fans which culminated in Mayor of Tavistock Steve Hipsey awarding him the title of Esteemed Catizen of Tavistock.

‘To be perfectly honest I didn't know a lot about Polo,’ Hipsey told the BBC.

‘I did some research, and it turns out this cat is quite amazing. He travels around and he is very comfortable and confident in town – he just purrs around the place, and everybody loves him.’

Polo was unavailable for comment.
