Thousands of London taxi drivers have received automated penalties from Transport for London (TfL) despite being exempt from the city's congestion charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

The association’s general secretary, Steve McNamara, suggested that a recent cyberattack against TfL which disrupted the renewal process for taxi licenses could be to blame.

A TfL spokesperson said there had been an error with a routine data upload.

‘We are cancelling the penalty charge notices and apologise for any inconvenience caused,’ they added.
