London Councils is expected to distance itself from backing the idea of a land value tax when its leaders meet next month.

The organisation’s fiscal devolution task and finish group, which has now concluded three months of work, is not expected to recommend the tax as an ‘immediate policy priority’.

A report to the latest meeting of London Councils’ leaders’ committee in July said the group had considered the ‘relative merits’ of the tax and ‘provided a steer to consider whether this could eventually replace business rates’.

It is understood there was no particular objection to the tax and the option is likely to remain open, but London Councils first wants to undertake further work covering the practicalities.
