Bin lorries and street sweepers in Liverpool are to be used to map the region’s mobile phone coverage from four main providers.

The initiative will see mobile analysts Streetwave install measuring devices on council vehicles which will continually assess signal strength and data speeds during their rounds.

The combined authority-funded scheme will produce a free, interactive map showing how mobile providers perform down to street level.

‘Good mobile coverage isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity for work, travel, and daily life. But too many people still struggle with poor signal and slow data speeds,’ said the mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram.

‘This initiative will give people across our region the information they need to choose the best provider for them – while helping us identify areas that need better coverage, so no community is left behind.’
