Kent County Council (KCC) is proceeding with a legal challenge against the Government's decision on local government reorganisation in Kent, after repeated requests for an explanation went unanswered.

The Government announced its preferred option in July to replace KCC, Medway Council and the 12 district and borough councils with four unitary authorities. KCC says it has since asked ministers how and why that decision was reached but has received no answers.

Although the Government has paused the wider review process, the original decision for Kent still stands.

Reform UK council leader Linden Kemkaran said KCC wrote to ministers in July, twice in August and again in September. She had warned that legal action would be considered without a satisfactory response.

‘This isn't about opposing change,’ she said. ‘It's about making sure decisions that will fundamentally change Kent's future for decades are properly explained and backed by clear evidence.’

KCC Green Party group leader Mark Hood told Kent Online the legal action was ‘bonkers’.

‘Any legal action will be a monumental waste of money, especially when we are actually still waiting nervously for a possible alternative outcome from Westminster. Would we then see a second legal challenge?’ he said.
