Kensington & Chelsea Council terminates contract with Grenfell Tower managers

Kensington & Chelsea RLBC has decided to terminate its contract with the arms-length organisation that managed the Grenfell Tower, where 80 people died in a deadly blaze in June.

At a meeting yesterday, the council’s deputy leader and lead member for Grenfell recovery, housing and property said that trust between the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) and its tenants had completely broken down.

Kim Taylor-Smith said that the KCTMO should be dismantled entirely and replaced.

Cllr Taylor-Smith said: ‘We are looking at the options for the future management of our housing, and we will work closely with tenants, leaseholders, resident associations and other groups.

'Residents of the council, the Government and the KCTMO have come to the conclusion that after the tragedy of Grenfell the KCTMO no longer has the trust of the borough.

‘In light of this, we are working with the KCTMO to terminate the contract with the council.’

Cllr Taylor-Smith added that the council wanted to create a ‘resident-focused’ model to manage its housing stock.
