Just one in five claims for pothole-related damage to a vehicle were successful in the past year, research has revealed.

Freedom of Information requests to 36 UK councils by motoring retailer Halfords found that only 18% of claims were successful in receiving any payout.

It comes after app data found there were an estimated 11.5 million potholes on UK road networks.

Halfords’ managing director of garages, Karen Bellairs, said the UK’s roads were in a ‘shocking state’.

She urged the Government to do more, and said its pledge to fill a million potholes a year was ‘simply going to plaster over the cracks’.
