The Metropolitan Police has launched a criminal investigation after an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) camera in Sidcup exploded on Wednesday night.

The incident is being treated as a deliberate act, which was caused by what a police statement described as ‘a low-sophistication improvised explosive device (IED)’.

Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command are leading the investigation although the incident is not being treated as terrorism.

Detective chief superintendent Trevor Lawry, commander for the Bexley area said: ‘Thankfully, nobody was injured as a result of this incident, but it is extremely concerning that an explosive device seems to have been deliberately placed in a public place. This could have very easily resulted in members of the public being very seriously injured.’

A spokesperson from Bexley Council said: ‘Whilst our position against the ULEZ expansion is clear, we do not condone vandalism or criminal damage of any kind should this prove to be the cause of this incident.’
