Hull’s political leaders have united in demanding that Lord Peter Mandelson be stripped of his honorary role as High Steward of Hull.

Council Leader Mike Ross, Labour group leader Daren Hale, and the council’s Independent Group have agreed to table a motion at next week’s Full Council meeting to formally remove the title.

Cllr Ross said: ‘In light of recent developments, with agreement from the other political groups on the council, we will put forward a motion at next week’s Full Council meeting calling for the High Steward role to be removed from Lord Mandelson.’

The move comes after Labour leader Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his post as the UK’s ambassador to the United States, following mounting scrutiny over his links to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The High Stewardship of Hull is a ceremonial position dating back to 1853.

The real lesson of Andy Burnham's Makerfield success, argues Dr Jonathan Carr-West, is that place – not personality – is the key to Britain's future.
