Hull City Council has urged residents to report empty homes as part of the effort to tackle the ‘unprecedented housing shortage.’

The council is lending its support to national Empty Homes Week (3-9 March) and encouraging residents to help bring vacant housing back into use.

There are an estimated million empty homes nationwide, with some 250,000 vacant for longer than six months. In Hull the vacant homes count is over 4,750 with nearly 2,000 empty for over six months.

Hull City Council portfolio holder for Regeneration and Housing Cllr Paul Drake-Davis said: ‘Like most areas of the country, Hull has a high level of housing need. Bringing empty homes back into use is an important component of the council’s Private Housing Strategy and we will do everything within our power to make this happen by utilising the local knowledge and help of our residents.’
