How to deal with workplace bullying

Morale amongst local government workers has taken a real hit over the past four years as a result of malicious Coalition cuts to services, pay and conditions.

The findings of this survey show how these cuts are being played out by employers in the workplace. It is essential that councils adhere to their responsibility to create and maintain safe workplaces where all staff can carry out their jobs free from intimidation or abuse.

It is particularly concerning that so many cases of bullying are not being reported. Anyone suffering from bullying or harassment should keep a written record or diary of all incidents, no matter how small, and report these to their union representative if they don't feel they can approach their line manager.

Staff are protected by a combination of employers' policies and legislation, and all employees should be aware of their responsibilities towards their colleagues and should be encouraged to report issues should they feel the need to.
