Housing without delay: removing one of the major obstacles

The new Housing Without Delay initiative focusses on using preventative measures within the home as a health intervention.

It aims to use changes to the home environment to help people’s physical and mental health and reduce hospital admissions.

AAT, the UK’s #1 provider of portable, re-prescribable stairway solutions, is in a unique position to support OTs to deliver the initiative.

Mobility is the #1 limitation affecting British people(1). Stairs are the second most common hazard in the home(2). Almost 50,000 people are hospitalised each year as a result of a fall on stairs(3).

Making stairways accessible is therefore a key priority towards delivering the Housing Without Delay initiative.

Only AAT can deliver the answer without delay.

Its top-selling Sella stairclimber, usually funded from equipment budgets and requires no installation. There is therefore no delay whilst Grant applications are processed, nor in assessment of the building structure and fabric, and no waiting for installation. All that is needed is appropriate assessment, to fulfil PEOP suitability.

Further, unlike alternative stairway access solutions, AAT’s Sella can, through its portability, be used across multiple staircases within a home environment- and even outside. The physical and mental wellbeing of the client and is enhanced.

The design of the Sella also means transfers are reduced- particularly from seat/wheelchair to stairlift and back. Once the stairway transfer is complete, the carer can continue onwards to destination without transferring the client from the Sella. The carer’s physical and mental wellbeing is thus also supported.

Almost every local authority already owns at least one AAT stairclimber, so, when available (no longer needed by the original recipient), it can be quickly re-prescirbed/recycled/re-issued to another user. This effects timely preventative measures without major capital expenditure: the re-issue, including PEOP assessment, servicing of the Sella and in-person 1:1 training of the carer(s) costs <£1000.

No other stairway access provider has that breadth of capability.
