Highways workers jailed for racist bullying

Three Amey Mouchel employees have been jailed for three years for subjecting their Asian colleague to a 10-month campaign of racial bullying.

The men, who worked at the contractor’s motorway depot in Bescot, Walsall, admitted racial harassment at Wolverhampton Crown Court last week.
The court heard how on his final day of work they tied Amjid Mahmood to railings, washed him down with soapy water, and tried to force-feed him bacon. On another occasion they placed a rucksack containing a device resembling a bomb in his locker, while on another his trousers were set on fire while he was wearing them.

Judge John Warner said: ‘You humiliated him and the things you did to him were painful, hurtful, dangerous and done with considerable thought.

‘This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated in a civilised society, in the workplace or elsewhere.’

Mahmood only reported the bullying, which took place between Autumn 2005 and summer 2006, after he had left the company.

Amey Mouchel said in a statement: ‘There is no place in our organisation – or in that of the two parent firms – for people who behave in this way and we will continue to deal robustly with any future incidents of this type.’
